It would be ludicrous anywhere else in the world, but here it is merely a lot of speed bumps creating a uniquely African traffic pattern. We spend the time playing that favourite Western gazing game called, ‘what on earth could they have been thinking?’ We eventually crawl into the next brightly-coloured cell-phone branded town. The roof racks are still attached, if only barely.

The gas station attendant has the answer to our problem and three minutes later a pick-up truck appears. It’s seen better days but the wheels are still generally pointing in the right direction. Negotiations begin. We baffle the driver with our clever calculations and undeniable logic; he strikes back using emotion and pity. We meet half way. The price is more than a local would pay, but white-man tax is as certain as a Catholic Pope.
